History

St. Mary’s Court Housing Development Corporation was incorporated in the District of Columbia in 1976. It is a non-profit corporation, with the purpose of developing a rental apartment home for older and disabled persons on property located in the Foggy Bottom area of Washington, DC, pursuant to Section 202 of the National Housing Act. It is financed under terms of a regulatory agreement with the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Opened in 1979, the project serves the community as well as its residents. Run by a Board of Directors, St. Mary’s Court seeks to assist residents in living here as long as possible by facilitating support services and activities.

Diversity has always been a goal, and on its recent 40-year anniversary, over 30 countries were represented by St. Mary’s Court residents. In its 40-year history, some 800 plus residents have been housed.

In 1995, St. Mary’s Court received “Best Practices Award” presented by HUD and the Administration on Aging. We received this award presented nationwide to 13 winners for effectively providing housing and supportive services for older and/or disabled residents.
